The Beautiful Maldive Islands

My husband and I were thinking about going on our honey moon in the Maldives, but it just didn’t work itself out in time. We both had work commitments to take care of, and we discovered that one must stay about a month before another plane would leave or arrive into the island. Now, I don’t know if there is only one plane every month as a general rule, but it was so during the time we wanted to visit. It is a bit expensive, but these images of the island make me believe it is well worth it. I have a few friends that have visited, and they describe it as pure paradise on earth. I am excited to visit when the time permits, but for now, I can simply view these lovely images and imagine what it will be like.

The Maldives is the smallest Asian country in the world, and it is the lowest country in the world with about 4 ft 11 in above sea level. The country sits between the Arabian sea and the Indian Ocean near the southern coast of India and off the Western Coast of Sri Lanka. The island country is formed by a double chain of twenty six atolls spread over 90 kilometres, which makes the Maldives one of the most disparate countries in the world as well. The Maldivian weather ranges from 24 and 33 °C (91 °F) throughout the year. While it is quite humid most of the time, the constant sea breeze keeps the air cool and the heat mitigated. The country has been plagued by environmental issues due to climate change such as the rising sea level, earthquakes and the disasterous 2004 Tsunami. As a result, the country and its leaders have pledged to make the Maldives carbon-neutral within the decade. The Maldives is certainly a beautiful destination, but it isn’t without it’s dangers. Like all travel, one must make sure to understand native customs and be aware of environmental issues typical of the location. Nevertheless, it is certainly a country I will be visiting when I am able.

  2. [...] Here’s another way to build a tiny house… right on the back of an old boat. The Maldive Islands is a tiny country in the Indian Ocean formed by a group of 26 atolls. The average elevation is 4′ 11″ so it would seem natural for these folks to build homes on boats. Looks like an amazing place to visit before the end of the century (if you catch my drift).
